Two of three students in our district experience food and/or housing insecurity in the Southern California community college district where I work. Nationally, three in five students experience these challenges.
As we embark on the fall semester and fall holiday season, please pause to think about the people who experience school, long weekends and holidays differently because it includes lack of access to campus resources (food, shower, safer spaces, air conditioning).
Of course there are others struggling, but this post is being written after communication with one of my students who lives without housing.
We can do better than this if we want to and demand it.
